Understanding Melasma, Brown Spots, and Hyperpigmentation

Melasma can be induced by various factors, including: Ultraviolet (UV) Light:   Exposure to UV radiation from the sun. Blue Light:   Emitted from devices like phones, tablets, and computers. Heat: High temperatures, such as those in hot yoga, can also trigger melasma.

Even without direct sun exposure, blue light from screens and heat can stimulate melanin production, leading to melasma.

This condition results from an irregular and uneven distribution of melanin in the skin, which can be superficial, mid, or deep.

Brown Spots (Solar Lentigines) are caused by sun exposure and increased melanin synthesis due to UV light.

Brown spots are often associated with sun damage and can indicate a risk of skin cancer.

Hormonal Influence on skin discoloration

Hormonal fluctuations, such as those during pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause, can accentuate hyperpigmentation.

Hormonal imbalances can stimulate melanocytes, the pigment  producing cells, leading to uneven melanin distribution.

For those on hormone treatments, maintaining balance is crucial.

I manage my own melasma with Vitamin CFK and quarterly Clear and Brilliant treatments, despite being on estrogen pills.

Prevention and Control

One of the most effective ways to manage hyperpigmentation is through diligent photo protection is Sunscreen, antioxidants, and lifestyle adjustments.

Use mineral based sunscreens with iron oxides to protect against UV and blue light, incorporate products like Vitamin C to stabilize melanin synthesis, and be mindful of heat exposure from activities like hot yoga or using LED masks.

Avoid These treatments

Microneedling and Microdermabrasion can cause hyperpigmentation by irritating the skin. Also, Overuse of tretinoin, AHAs, or scrubs can lead to irritation and increased melanin production.

At Home Treatment Options

  1.      Vitamin C (L - Ascorbic Acid):   Effective for stabilizing melanin and reducing pigmentation.
  2.     Sunscreen:   Essential for daily protection, even indoors.
  3.     Moisturizers and Barrier Repair:   To prevent irritation and maintain healthy skin.

MDAiRE Vitamin C-FK for Skin Discoloration

Vitamin C is a powerhouse antioxidant that offers multiple benefits for the skin, particularly in managing hyperpigmentation. It works by inhibiting tyrosinase, an enzyme that plays a crucial role in melanin production. As an antioxidant, Vitamin C neutralizes free radicals caused by UV exposure and pollution, preventing oxidative stress and skin damage.

By stabilizing melanin synthesis, Vitamin C helps reduce the appearance of dark spots and evens out skin tone. When selecting a Vitamin C product, look for L-ascorbic acid, the most effective form of Vitamin C for skin penetration.

Apply Vitamin C serum in the morning after cleansing and before applying sunscreen. This combination not only protects your skin from UV damage but also enhances the effectiveness of your sunscreen.

You can apply twice a day, after your evening cleanse as well. Regular use of Vitamin C is key. Incorporate it into your daily skincare routine for best results.
