Science Q&A: NMF Hydrator

What does NMF stand for and what role does it play in skin health?

A: Natural moisturizing factor (NMF) is essential for appropriate karotinocyte hydration, barrier homeostasis, minimization of trans-epidermal water loss and cellular health.

The role of NMF is to maintain adequate skin hydration. Adequate hydration of the Stratem Cornium serves three major functions:

1. Maintain plasticity of the skin, protecting it from damage.
2. Allows Hydrolytic enzymes to function on the process of desquamation.
3. Contributes to optimum Stratum Corneum function.

Is NMF necessary for the skin barrier to be healthy?

A: The skin barrier is crucial for ensuring the skin looks and feels healthy and hydrated. It's your bodys first line of defense against environmental pollutants, toxins, micro-organisms and allergens that your skin is exposed to everyday. Disruption of the barrier results in inflammation infection and several dermatological diseases.

RXR Retinol (Fig 2)

Retinol Diagram

Science Q&A: RXR Retinol

Q: What's the difference between retinol, retinaldehyde and retonic acid and how does it effect the skin?

A: Retinol is a type of retinoid- a class of Vitamin A derivatives used in dermatology. Retinoic acid (Tretinoin), Adapalene, and Tazrotene are forms of Vitamin A that are frequently used in dermatology. Retinol and Retinaldehyde are both considered cosmeceutical forms of Vitamin A and are often used in skincare products for their anti-aging effects. Although less potent than Tretinoin (which is prescription strength), both forms get converted to Retinoic Acid in the skin. Retinol and Retinaldehyde get converted back and forth to one another but both end up getting converted to Retinoic Acid. The formulation, stabilization and delivery mechanism of Retinol greatly affects its efficacy and side effect profile. This results in its powerful anti-aging benefits without the irritation of a prescription strength Retinoic Acid. This is due to less extracellular product to minimize irritation and greater efficacy from more internuclear retention of the product. Retinol binds the Retinol-RPB (Retinol binding complex) which enters the cell through a RBP receptor complex (STRA6). Once it enters the cell nucleus, it binds a heterodimer which is made up of the RAR and RXR receptors. This results in the transcription and translation of genes that encode proteins with powerful anti-aging effects. Our elegant formulation of Retinol provides molecular stabilization and amplified efficacy. Our proprietary blend with CoQ10, a powerful antioxidant augments the production of collagen and elastin in the extracellular matrix giving skin a smooth tight texture. Polypodium leukotomas, a newly discovered plant based enzyme protects the newly synthesized collagen from within. The blend of these powerful anti-aging ingredients work synergistically to restore and protect the skin. Retinol is one of the best studied cosmeceuticals with many known skin benefits. Benefits include the stimulation of collagen synthesis, decreasing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, reduction in pore size, diminished acne, increased hydration, lightening pigmentation, reducing atypical cells and improving texture. Retinol is best used at bedtime. Although, unlike its relative tretinoin which gets inactivated by sunlight, Retinol can also be safely used in the morning as well. When starting out, nightly use is preferred over twice daily use until your skin gets used to it to minimize irritation. **Not Pregnancy Safe

Q: What is cellular turnover?

A: Cellular turnover in the skin is important because this keeps the skin looking bright and fresh. The time that it takes a baby stem cell to develop into a corneocyte and exfoliate off the epidermis is called the "transepidermal time". In kids its 14 days, in teens it's 28 days and in adults its between 28-42 days. The faster the cellular turnover, the faster the transepidermal time, the fresher the skin cells, and the brighter and healthier the skin looks. That's why in older patients skin can look dull, dry, and listless. Those cells become more scienescent and lazy. They need to be simulated to behave younger and become more active in synthesizing collagen and renewing themselves. Babies and kids have fresh bright viable skin. This is why. Those cells are active! Under the microscope, patients over 40 have a slower transepidermal time and the cells are sluggish compared to younger patients. However, a patient over forty who uses a Retinol will have cells that look like that of a younger patient under the microscope. This correlated with youthful looking skin clinically as well.

Necktyte-R (Fig 4 A/B)

NecktyteRDiagram

Science Q&A: NeckTyte-R

Q: Why do I need a specialized product for my neck and decollete? Why can't I just use my other products like my NMF Hydrator Barrier Repair or Vitamin
C-FK Brightening Complex?

A: The neck and chest skin is different from the skin on your face. Neck skin histology, which is the microscopic structure of tissues in this skin, is different from the skin on your face. It is thinner, more susceptible to damage, and it lacks sebaceous glands. This means that it requires different active ingredients and different vehicle delivery systems. MDAiRE™ Neck Tyte-R complex addresses these issues by using peptides that demonstrate neuromodulator effects, integrating a heavier use of DNA repair enzymes, and remaining focused on barrier restoration and NMF's (natural moisturizing factors). The neuromodulator effects of the peptides in the MDAiRE™ Neck Tyte-R effect the innervation (stimulation) of the neck muscles and overlying skin to give a smooth instead of textured appearance to the delicate crepey skin of the neck and decollete. The thinner skin of the neck and decollete require a heavier use of DNA repair enzymes and peptide complexes to reverse the sun and environmental damage that has taken place. Hydration of your skin on your neck and decollete skin will make your skin appear smoother and supple.

Q: Are there certain antioxidants that are more important to use on the neck and decollete?

A: Topical Melatonin and Polypodium leukotomoas have been shown to be more effective and powerful antioxidants for the specific neck and decollete area. Polypodium leukotomoas is a natural plant based extract derived from the fern leaf that protects DNA from the harmful effects of UV light and environmental pollutants. Melatonin is a hormone naturally made in the pineal gland that helps with sleep but does not induce sleep when applied topically. When we sleep, our bodies go into restoration mode with increased cellular rejuvenation and energy repletion. This powerful antioxidant has the same effect on the skin. It helps increase antioxidant enzyme production and supports our natural repair functions. It is an effective defense against UV rays and helpful for anti-aging goals. Antioxidants such as Vitamin C or L-ascorbic acid can be irritating and proinflammatory to the delicate skin of your neck and decollete.
