The Hands Don’t Lie: How to Rejuvenate Aging Hands

When it comes to skincare, we’re usually great about protecting and treating our face, neck, and chest—but the hands? They’re often left behind.

In fact, your hands are one of the first areas to show visible signs of aging. Daily sun exposure, frequent hand washing, and environmental stress take a toll. Over time, the skin becomes thinner, loses volume, and develops discoloration—leaving a disconnect between the youthful glow of your face and the tired appearance of your hands.

In this weeks youtube video, I break down exactly what happens to our hands as we age—and more importantly, what you can do about it. From simple at-home habits to the most effective in-office procedures, this is your guide to getting your hands back in sync with the rest of your skin.

Why Do Our Hands Age So Fast?

Unlike our face, which usually benefits from daily sunscreen and an arsenal of serums, our hands get constant exposure to sun and trauma—with little to no protection. Driving, cleaning, scrubbing, hand washing, and even pushing a stroller—all of it adds up. Over time, the skin barrier weakens, collagen depletes, and signs of aging accelerate.

The 3 Key Signs of Hand Aging

  1. Color Changes
Think brown spots, redness, and discoloration—usually from cumulative UV damage.

  2. Texture Irregularities
The skin on the hands becomes thin, fragile, and prone to bruising as collagen, elastin, and hydration decline.

  3. Volume Loss
Subcutaneous fat decreases, revealing veins, tendons, and bony structures underneath the skin.

What You Can Do at Home

A great hand rejuvenation plan starts with daily habits:

  • Sun Protection: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with iron oxides to the hands daily—especially when driving.

  • Skincare Actives: Use ingredients like vitamin C, AHAs, and retinoids to improve skin tone and texture. I personally use 0.05% retinal nightly on my hands.

  • Hydration & Nutrition: Drink at least 2 liters of water daily and eat an antioxidant-rich diet to support your skin from the inside out.

  • Barrier Repair: Look for hand creams that restore moisture and support the skin barrier.

The Best In-Office Treatments

Want to take it further? In-office options can dramatically improve the tone, texture, and fullness of your hands:

  • Lasers for Brown Spots:
Pico lasers, 1927 nm Fraxel, and other targeted wavelengths can erase years of pigment in just one session.

  • Fractional Lasers for Texture:
Fractionated CO2 or erbium lasers stimulate collagen and thicken aging skin. Recovery is a bit longer on the hands due to reduced circulation but the results are worth it.

  • Fillers for Volume Loss:
Radiesse (calcium hydroxyapatite) is my go-to—it not only restores volume but stimulates new collagen, with results that last up to 2 years. Fat transfer is another (more permanent) surgical option.

  • Chemical Peels:
Glycolic acid and TCA peels can smooth skin and reduce discoloration. I love the ZO Skin Health 3-Step Peel for this area.

What to Skip:
Microneedling and microcoring are not ideal for hands and may cause unwanted pigmentation or thinning.
