My Dermatologist Morning Skincare Routine (No Foundation, Just Glow)
People ask me almost every day whether I am wearing foundation, and the honest answer is no. My entire base is medical-grade skincare and a tinted mineral SPF. This is my real dermatologist morning skincare routine, the same one I do before I head into the clinic, and I want to walk you through not just the steps but the science behind why each one earns its place.
A good morning skincare routine is not about layering on as many products as possible. It is about the right actives, in the right order, with delivery systems that actually carry those ingredients into the skin. Here is exactly how I build my no makeup makeup glow from a freshly washed face.
That glow everyone asks about isn't foundation. It's healthy, well-treated skin plus a tinted SPF, layered in the right order.
Step 1: Cleanse Without Over-Stripping
I start every morning with my Bio-Cleanse 5.5. I formulated it at a pH of 5.5 because that is the sweet spot for a cleanser that respects the skin's acid mantle. It gently detoxifies and purifies without stripping away your natural moisturizing factors, so your skin feels genuinely clean rather than tight, squeaky, or irritated. The active ingredients penetrate while you cleanse, then rinse away clean.
You do not need a double or triple cleanse with a well-balanced formula. One thoughtful pass is enough.
Gentle Exfoliation With Cloud Polish
A few mornings a week I follow with Cloud Polish. This is a mechanical exfoliant with extremely fine grains that lift away the dead cells of the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of skin. Removing that buildup stimulates cellular renewal in the keratinocytes below, so you turn over a fresh layer of skin faster than you would on your own. It also helps debride and decongest pores, which visibly refines their appearance.
It is deliberately not harsh. There are no fragrances or dyes, just an effective, even exfoliation. A little flush of pink afterward is normal, healthy blood flow to the skin, not irritation.
Step 2: Vitamin C, and Why Most Serums Fall Short
On clean skin, my first active is Vitamin C-FK. Here is the hard truth about Vitamin C serum benefits: most formulas never deliver them, because the Vitamin C either sits on the surface of the skin or is made with a derivative that simply does not do much. L-ascorbic acid is the most effective form of Vitamin C, and it is also the hardest to formulate and stabilize, so many brands reach for easier, weaker derivatives instead.
This blend uses L-ascorbic acid in its proper molecular configuration, paired with actives that potentiate its effect. It also works on pigment from several angles at once. Think of melanin production as a ladder: rather than blocking a single rung, this formula targets multiple steps, including Kojic Acid to quiet tyrosinase activity. That is why people with melasma or hyperpigmentation often see a brighter, more even tone within weeks.
One note: a true L-ascorbic acid serum will oxidize and shift toward a warmer, orange hue over time. I intentionally leave out the preservatives and color stabilizers that would mask this. The color change is natural and does not mean the serum has lost its efficacy.
Step 3: Treating the Delicate Under-Eye
Next is my ECM Eye Complex, the very first product I ever engineered, originally for myself, because I could not find an eye serum I loved. The skin under the eye is histologically thinner than anywhere else on the face, it lacks oil glands, and it behaves differently from the rest of your skin, so it needs to be treated differently.
This formula combines Green Tea polyphenols and Polypodium Leucotomos with ingredients that gently vasoconstrict to soften the look of dark circles, while supporting collagen and elastin over time. I am in my forties and have done plenty of lasers, but I am genuinely convinced a well-built eye serum is one of the most impactful things you can do consistently for this area.
Step 4: Restore the Skin Barrier
Then comes the NMF Hydrator. I call it a hydrator rather than a moisturizer on purpose, because its job is to minimize transepidermal water loss and hydrate the skin from within. A strong barrier keeps water in for that bouncy, plump glow, and just as importantly keeps environmental stressors out.
When your barrier is compromised, pollutants and free radicals can move more freely through the skin, breaking down collagen and elastin and accelerating laxity, fine lines, and wrinkles. You want your barrier to be resilient and tolerant. Smooth, taut, hydrated skin starts here.
Step 5: Yes, You Can Wear This Retinol in the Morning
Retinol is one of the most effective ingredients we have for photoaging, fine lines, wrinkles, pore size, and uneven pigmentation. Do not let anyone talk you out of it. The product I use is RXR Retinol.
I know the immediate question: are you not supposed to keep Retinol to nighttime only? With most retinols, that caution makes sense. RXR is built in a microencapsulated delivery system, which carries the Retinol into the cell, toward the nucleus, instead of leaving it sitting in the extracellular matrix where it tends to cause irritation, inflammation, and light sensitivity. That encapsulation also protects it from breaking down in UV light.
The result is a Retinol that is more effective and less sensitizing, and one I am comfortable wearing both morning and night. To be clear, this is specific to this microencapsulated formula. It is not a blanket rule for every Retinol on the market.
Step 6: A Foundation-Free, Glowing Base
With my skincare in place, all I add is sun protection, and that is what creates the no makeup makeup look people ask about. I finish with Mineral Fix, my tinted mineral sunscreen. The tint comes from Iron Oxides, which do more than add color: they help shield the skin from UV light as well as the blue light from our phones and screens, while adding a layer of protection against environmental pollutants that would otherwise break down collagen and elastin.
It leaves a glassy, silky, lit-from-within finish on the skin. That glow is not foundation, it is healthy, well-treated skin plus a tinted SPF. For the few areas where I do not want any tint transferring onto my white lab coat, such as my neck, I reach for a sheer, untinted mineral SPF instead.
From there, my only actual makeup is on my eyes and lips, never on my skin. The base itself is entirely skincare.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you wear Retinol during the day?
Most traditional retinols are best reserved for nighttime, but a microencapsulated Retinol such as RXR Retinol is protected from breaking down in UV light, which is why I wear it both morning and night. This applies to the encapsulated formula specifically, not to every Retinol.
How do you get a no makeup makeup look without foundation?
Start with a strong skincare base, brightening Vitamin C, a barrier-restoring hydrator, and exfoliation to smooth texture, then finish with a tinted mineral SPF. The healthy glow comes from well-treated skin rather than coverage.
Why does my Vitamin C serum turn orange?
True L-ascorbic acid oxidizes and shifts to a warmer, orange tone over time. Without added color stabilizers, that change is completely normal and does not mean the serum has stopped working.
What order should I apply my morning skincare routine?
Cleanse first, then apply your thinnest actives to thickest: Vitamin C, eye serum, hydrator, Retinol if you use a day-safe one, and always finish with sunscreen as your final step.
Is a tinted mineral sunscreen enough on its own?
A tinted mineral SPF with Iron Oxides protects against UV and blue light while giving a natural, even finish. Paired with consistent skincare, it can absolutely replace foundation for an everyday glow.
